What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles at various points on the body. It’s an important part of the health care system called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is a holistic approach to health care in that the well being of the entire person is assessed and addressed in treatment. Mind, body and spirit are all considered relevant and interconnected in disease and health.
According to TCM, illness and pain are caused by a blockage of qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi is the body’s energy. It flows through the body along meridians, which are likes pathways along the inside and the surface of the body. The goal of TCM is to restore the appropriate balance of qi through the meridians.
Acupuncture uses very thin, stainless steel, pre-sterilized, disposable needles to stimulate and redirect the flow of qi in the body.
What is Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture?
The Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture system is a patented technique that uses a very shallow needling style based on ancient methods. Reported benefits of this system include:
- Soften fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve skin tone and texture
- Tighten and lift the jaw line
- Restore brightness and vitality to the complexion
Just like classical acupuncture, Mei Zen is rooted in the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Each treatment is tailored individually to the patient and imbalances are addressed as part of every treatment. As a result, many patients also experience a variety of beneficial “side effects” from their cosmetic treatments. These side effects may include:
- Improved sleep, digestion, and energy and reduction of hot flashes.
The recommended course of treatment for cosmetic acupuncture is ten treatments – two per week for five consecutive weeks. The initial consultation (which is FREE of charge) includes a discussion about the Mei Zen system and the patient’s goals, as well as a brief health assessment. The health assessment helps the acupuncturist determine an individualized treatment specifically for you.
An important part of cosmetic acupuncture is that beauty begins on the inside, and good health is the first step toward beautiful skin. As a result, at-home acupressure routines and lifestyle, diet and herbal advice concerning skin health and radiance are also offered.
Cosmetic acupuncture can also address acne, Bells Palsy and rosacea.

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is another branch of TCM. It uses the properties of plants, and occasionally animal products, to help restore the balance of qi in the body in order to address illnesses and improve health. These products are most often ingested although certain topical herbs are available as well. Chinese herbs can be provided in tablet or granule (powder) form, based on the patient’s preference. Only the highest quality herbal medicines are prescribed. They are organic and tested for pesticides and heavy metals.
